The Sailing Barge Monarch

OCTOBER 14TH. - SWANAGE, DORSET.

About four in the afternoon the coastguard reported that H.M.S. Albatross was towing the sailing barge Monarch and had asked that the life-boat should go out, take over, and tow her into harbour. A light east-north-east breeze was blowing and the sea was smooth.

The motor life-boat Thomas Marby was launched at 4.14. She found that the barge had lost her bow-sprit. On board was a married couple. The barge was their home and they were sailing her to Toquay to have her fitted out as a house-boat. Two lifeboatmen went on board and the life-boat towed her to Poole. She arrived back at her station at 8.15 that night. - Rewards, £21 16s..
