Launches 33 Lives rescued 14

OCTOBER 3RD. - NEWHAVEN, SUSSEX.

At 8.50 at night a message was received from the Southern Railway Company that a small yacht had fired distress signals off the east pier. A west-north-west breeze was blowing, with a choppy sea. The motor life-boat Cecil and Lilian Philpott was launched at 9.35, and found the motor yacht Jessica, of Newhaven, one mile south of the harbour. She had two on board. Her engines had broken down. The life-boat towed her to Newhaven and returned to her station at 10.30. - Rewards, £19 17s.

OCTOBER 8TH. - ST. DAVID’S, PEMBROKESHIRE. At 8.25 at night the coastguard reported that the motor boat Secret, of Littlehaven, with three on board, had left Littlehaven in the morning for Milford Haven and had not arrived. A second message at 10.42 said that a light had been seen in St. Bride’s Bay earlier in the evening. A moderate south-easterly breeze was blowing and the sea was slight. The motor life-boat Civil Service No. 6 was launched at 12.25 next morning and searched the bay. She saw a flare and found the motor boat two miles west of Green Scar Rock with her engine broken down. She towed her to Solva harbour, and returned to her station, arriving at 4.25 that morning. A donation was received from the owner. - Rewards, £13 13s.

OCTOBER 11TH. - WHITBY, AND SCARBOROUGH, YORKSHIRE. At 4.35 in the morning the Whitby coastguard reported a message from Cullercoats wireless station that the S.S.. Glamorganbrook, of London, bound for the Isle of Wight from Blyth, was making water fast five miles south of Whitby, and sending out SOS signals. A fresh northeasterly breeze was blowing, but the sea was smooth. The Whitby No. 1 motor life-boat Mary Ann Hepworth was launched at 5.6 and searched, but found nothing and arrived back at her station at 7.20. The Scarborough coastguard had reported the steamer’s distress signals at 5.3 to the Scarborough life-boat station and the motor life-boat Herbert Joy II was launched at 5.23. She found a ship’s life-boat with fifteen on board, two and a half miles north-east of Castle Hill, and learned that the Glamorganbrook had sunk with the loss of her captain. The life-boat took the survivors on board and towed the ship’s boat to Scarborough, arriving back at her station at 10.20 that morning. - Rewards : Whitby, £11 6s. 6d. ; Scarborough, £36 9s. 6d.

OCTOBER 12TH. - RAMSEY, ISLE OF MAN. At 2.5 in the afternoon the coastguard reported that a vessel was continually blowing her siren one mile east of Maughold Head and at 2.22 confirmed that she was in distress. A moderate east-north-east breeze was blowing, with a moderate sea. The motor life-boat Lady Harrison was launched at 2.50 and found the R.A.S.C. vessel M.O.B.7 anchored one mile off Cornaa Beach. She had trouble with her boiler and the life-boat stood by until it had been repaired. She then escorted her to Douglas Bay, and arrived back at her station at 8.45 that evening.- Rewards, £38 0s. 6d.

OCTOBER 12TH. - TOBERMORY, ISLE OF MULL. At 6.30 in the evening a telephone message was received from the local doctor asking the life-boat to take a seriously injured man to Oban. He was a woodman and had had his foot badly crushed while felling a large tree. It was a Saturday evening, and there would be no steamer sailing until Monday. A light north-westerly breeze was blowing and the sea was smooth. The motor life-boat Sir Arthur Rose left her moorings at 7.35, took on board the injured man, and a nurse, and arrived at Oban at 10.30. The patient and nurse were landed. When the nurse returned the life-boat left for Tobermory and arrived at 2.30 next morning. - No expense to the Institution.

OCTOBER 1 4TH. - BERWICK - ON - TWEED, NORTHUMBERLAND. At 10.56 in the morning the coastguard reported a vessel aground on Spittal Point. The northerly breeze was light, but there was a heavy swell. The motor life-boat J. and W. was launched at eleven o’clock and found the Danish motor ketch Viking, on a pleasure cruise from Copenhagen, with two on board.

She took them off. In doing it she touched the sand, and was thrown against the ketch and damaged. She landed the two men at Berwick at 11.35. When it was seen later that the Viking had refloated, the life-boat put out again at noon and towed her in, arriving at 1.30 that afternoon. A letter of appreciation was received from the owner.- Rewards, £8 11s.

OCTOBER 14TH. - SWANAGE, DORSET.

About four in the afternoon the coastguard reported that H.M.S. Albatross was towing the sailing barge Monarch and had asked that the life-boat should go out, take over, and tow her into harbour. A light east-north-east breeze was blowing and the sea was smooth.

The motor life-boat Thomas Marby was launched at 4.14. She found that the barge had lost her bow-sprit. On board was a married couple. The barge was their home and they were sailing her to Toquay to have her fitted out as a house-boat. Two lifeboatmen went on board and the life-boat towed her to Poole. She arrived back at her station at 8.15 that night. - Rewards, £21 16s.

OCTOBER 14TH. HELIER, JERSEY.

At 8.40 at night information was received that the motor yacht Finisterre, of Lowestoft, was among the rocks east of the harbour. There was no wind and the sea was smooth. The motor life-boat Howard D. was launched at 9.7 and found the yacht in a very dangerous position five hundred yards north-east of Demie-des-Pas Lighthouse. Her engine had broken down. The life-boat towed her to St.

Helier and arrived back at her station at 10.35. - Rewards, £13 19s. 6d.

OCTOBER 21ST. - THURSO, CAITHNESSSHIRE.

At 2.30 in the morning the life-boat coxswain was out fishing and saw the schooner Trinite', of Gothenburg, ashore on the west point of Brims Ness. She made distress signals, and the coxswain returned to Thurso to call out the life-boat. A light southeasterly breeze was blowing and the sea was moderate. The motor life-boat H.C.J. was launched at 3.35. On her way she took a fishing boat in tow. This boat put a man aboard the schooner. She had come from Iceland and had got off her course in fog.

The life-boat stood by. The schooner refloated and anchored in the bay to wait for high water. It was then found that she was making water and the life-boat escorted her to the harbour, where she was beached. The life-boat arrived back at her station at six o’clock that morning. - Rewards, £14 6s. 6d.

OCTOBER 23TH. - MARGATE, KENT. At 6.31 at night the coastguard reported that a vessel was flashing SOS signals from the Goodwin Sands four miles north of the lifeboat station. A fresh north-easterly breeze was blowing. The sea was rough. The motor life-boat The Lord Southborough (Civil Service No. I) was launched at 6.55 and found the motor cruiser Lenora Venture, of London, four miles north-north-west of Margate. She had four on board. Her propellers were damaged and her steering gear had broken down. The master asked the coxswain to tow the motor cruiser to Ramsgate, but as the weather was unfavourable the life-boat took her instead to Margate and arrived back at her station at 9.30. - Property salvage case.

OCTOBER 26TH. - BARROW, LANCASHIRE.

At 2.50 in the morning the Hoylake coastguard reported a message, from the Morecambe Bay Light-vessel, that a vessel two miles north of the light-vessel was making distress signals. A fresh easterly breeze was blowing, and the sea was rough. The motor life-boat N.T. was launched at 3.10 and found the fishing smack Polly, with a crew of two.Her propeller had become foul of a fishing net.

A coaster had her in tow. The life-boat took over the tow and at the request of the smack’s skipper towed her to Pie1 harbour and beached her there. She arrived back at her station at 10.50 that morning. - Rewards, £16 16s. 6d.

OCTOBER 26TH. - SELSEY, SUSSEX. At 2.13 in the afternoon the coastguard reported that a sailing yacht had had her top mast carried away and appeared to be anchored three miles south-east of Hayling Island. A moderate south-easterly breeze was blowing.

There was a heavy swell. The motor life-boat Canadian Pacific was launched at 2.30. She found that the yacht, which had five on board, was unable to make any headway in the swell.

She had broken her mast. Eventually her crew were able to rig a small sail and the lifeboat escorted her into Chichester harbour, arriving back at her station at 5.10. - Rewards, £13 11s. 6d.

OCTOBER 26TH. - WHITEHILLS, BANFFSHIRE.

At 5.46 in the evening the coastguard reported that a small boat appeared to be disabled two miles north of Banff. A moderate south-easterly breeze was blowing, with a choppy sea. The motor life-boat Civil Service No. 4 was launched at six o’clock and found the motor boat Artistic, of Macduff, stopped. She had two on board. They had been fishing. The younger man had fallen overboard. The other, who was his fatherin- law, had received an injury to his spine while trawling during the war. He had not been strong enough to haul the other aboard again, so had lashed him to the gunwhale.

Three life-boatmen went on board the boat, and lifted the man who was lashed to the gunwhale.

He was dead. The life-boat towed the boat to Whitehills, and arrived back at her station at nine that night. - Rewards, £16 8s. 6d.

OCTOBER 27TH. - LOWESTOFT, SUFFOLK.

At 12.45 in the afternoon the coastguard reported that a sailing boat was drifting towards the sands. She appeared to be in difficulties. A westerly breeze was blowing, and the sea was moderate. A watch was kept on the boat. By 1.45 she had drifted to the inner shoal of Newcombe Sands. The motor life-boat Michael Stephens was launched at 1.55 and found the sailing boat Chums, with one man and three boys on board. She was leaking and they were exhausted with rowing. The life-boat to wed them to Lowestoft, and arrived back at her station at three o’clock. - Rewards, £4 15s.

OCTOBER 27TH. - PORT ST. MARY, ISLE OF MAN. At 3.30 in the afternoon the coastguard telephoned that a small yacht was flying a distress signal south-east of Scarlett Point. A strong westerly wind was blowing, with a choppy sea. The motor life-boat Sir Heath Harrison war, launched at four o’clock and found the yacht Arrow, of Derbyhaven, one mile off Castletown. She had a man and a woman on board. They were exhausted.

They had left Castletown earlier in the day when the weather was fine, to sail to Derbyhaven, but the ebb tide and increasing wind had taken them off their course, and had blown away their sails, and they were being carried out to sea. The life-boat took the yacht in tow and brought her to Port St. Mary at 5.20.

OCTOBER 27TH. - WICK, CAITHNESSSHIRE.

At 10.38 at night the coastguard reported that flashes from a torch and a white flare had been seen six hundred yards north of South Head. A strong north-north-west breeze was blowing, with a moderate sea. The motor life-boat City of Edinburgh was launched at 10.50 and found the motor fishing boat Shamrock, of Wick, with her engine broken down. She had two on board. The life-boat towed her in, and arrived back at her station at 11.30 that night. - Rewards, £14 2s. 6d.

OCTOBER 27TH. - WALMER, KENT. At 8.20 at night the Deal coastguard reported that two men had put out in the rowing boat Kittywake earlier in the day and had not returned.

A moderate north-westerly breeze was blowing and the sea was slight. The motor life-boat Charles Dibdin (Civil Service No. 2) was launched at 8.30 and made a wide search but found nothing. She arrived back at her station at 12.15 next morning. Another message came from the coastguard at 7.58, that a small boat had been seen a mile eastnorth- east of the coastguard station making distress signals. The life-boat again put out at 8.15. She found the Kittywake two miles off St. Margarets Bay, took off the two men and towed her to Walmer arriving at 9.30 that morning. - Rewards : first service, £31 11s. 6d. ; second service, £14 5s.

OCTOBER 1ST. - WEYMOUTH, DORSET.

A yacht had been reported signalling for help, but could not be found. Later she was reported off the Isle of Wight. - Rewards, £18 16s.

OCTOBER 1ST. - RHYL, FLINTSHIRE, AND BEAUMARIS, ANGLESEY. Reports had been received that faint SOS calls had been heard and a patch of oil had been seen, but nothing could be found. - Rewards : Rhyl, £16 14s. ; Beaumaris, £16 4s.

OCTOBER 15TH. - ST. IVES, AND PADSTOW, CORNWALL. An aeroplane had crashed in the sea, but the pilot was rescued by another aeroplane. - Rewards : St. Ives, £11 1s. ; Padstow, £3 9s.

OCTOBER 18TH. - RAMSGATE, KENT.

A water-logged boat had been reported, but was found to be a telegraph cable buoy which had broken away from its moorings. - Rewards, £12 2s.

OCTOBER 19TH. - WALMER, KENT. Signals for help had been reported, but no vesselin need of help could be found. - Rewards, £16 13s.

OCTOBER 20TH. - NEWHAVEN, SUSSEX.

Two people had been trapped by the tide, but the coastguard rescued them. - Rewards, £21 16s.

OCTOBER 23RD. - WALTON AND FRINTON, ESSEX. A small yacht had been reported in difficulties, but her crew were rescued by a steamer. - Rewards, £15 2s. 6d.

OCTOBER 24TH. - SHOREHAM HARBOUR, SUSSEX. A motor boat had broken down, but was able to get under way again and reached the shore. - Rewards, £7 5s.

OCTOBER 25TH. - FENIT, CO. KERRY.

A motor fishing boat had been reported overdue, but could not be found. Eventually it reached land unaided. - Rewards, £20 13s. 6d.

OCTOBER 26TH. - SHERINGHAM, NORFOLK.

A motor vessel had gone ashore, but her crew were not in danger and the master declined the life-boat’s help. - Rewards, £41 6s. 6d.

OCTOBER 27TH. - DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN. Lights had been reported, but nothing was found. - Rewards, £13 2s. 6d.

OCTOBER 27TH. - HOYLAKE, CHESHIRE.

A fishing boat had been reported in difficulties, but did not need help. - Rewards, £14 19s.
