During the afternoon the coastguard telephoned that a motor fishing boat off Kinnaird Head appeared to be making for Fraserburgh under sail. Later they telephoned that she was drifting towards Cairnbulg Beacon. About four o’clock the boat burnt a flare, and at 4.22 the motor lifeboat John and Charles Kennedy was launched in a westerly breeze, with a choppy sea. She found the fishing boat El Alamein. Her engine had broken down at six the previous evening when she was returning from the fishing grounds and since then she had been drifting.
