During the afternoon of the 24th of November the Admiralty salvage officer requested that provisions and sundry small gear for salvage purposes should be taken to the S.S. Cantal. She had gone ashore some time before and her crew were running short of food. No other suitable boat was available, and at eight o’clock in the morning of the 25th the motor life-boat Greater London (Civil Service No. 3), on temporary duty at the station, was launched.
