At 5.5 P.M. the coastguard reported that the local motor fishing boat, Annie Cargill, was in difficulties and drifting rapidly towards the rocks half a mile east of Arbroath harbour.

A fresh W.S.W. wind was blowing, with a rather rough sea. The motor life-boat John and William Mudie was launched at 5.10 P.M. and found that the fishing boat’s engine had broken down.
