At 2.15 A.M. the KinnairdHead coastguard reported a vessel ashore, firing signals of distress, a quarter of a mile west of Cairnbulg lookout. A light N.N.E. wind was blowing, with a smooth sea and fog.

The motor life-boat John Russell, on temporary duty at the station, was launched at 2.45 A.M., and found the motor fishing smack Energy, of Trangisvaag, Faroe Islands, loaded with fish.
