The S.S. Letchworth

NOVEMBER 1ST. - SOUTHEND - ON - SEA.

ESSEX. At 2.45 P.M. the coastguard at the pier head telephoned that a ship was in distress near the Mouse Light-vessel. A fresh wind was blowing. At 3.5 P.M. the motor life-boat Greater London (Civil Service No. 3) put out and found that the S.S. Letchworth, of Newcastle, with a cargo of coal, had sunk a mile east of the West Oase Buoy. A naval vessel had got the crew of eighteen aboard. Five were seriously injured, twelve had minor injuries, one was dead. It was assumed that the steamer had been attacked.

All the men were put on board the life-boat, and she took them to Southend, arriving at 6 P.M. - Rewards, £7 14s. 6d..
