The Sailing Barge Veravia

FEBRUARY 17TH. - NEWHAVEN, SUSSEX. At 1.40 A.M. a barge was reported by the coastguard to be in distress off Seaford and burning red flares. A very strong southerly wind was blowing, with heavy seas, fog and blizzards of snow. At 2.25 A.M. the motor life-boat Cecil and Lilian Philpott was launched and found the sailing barge Veravia, with a crew of three, loaded with stone, dragging her anchors, towards a lee shore.

The life-boat was unable to get the barge in tow, and the crew would not leave her, so the life-boat then stood by until the Veravia had been taken in tow by a tug and escorted her into port. - Rewards, £20 18s. 3d.
