S.S. Accomac

JANUARY 31ST. - MARGATE, KENT.

At 9.33 A.M. a message was received from the coastguard that a vessel was sinking a mile E.S.E. of the Tongue Light-vessel. A moderate S.E. breeze was blowing, with thick fog, and the sea was choppy. At 9.45 A.M. the motor life-boat The Lord Southborough (Civil Service No. 1) was launched, but could not find the vessel. She must have sunk. The life-boat then saw a floating mine. She stood by it ; informed the Ramsgate coastguard of its position and warned the S.S. Accomac, which was approaching, and which altered her course accordingly. Later the life-boat was recalled by the Ramsgate coastguard and returned to her station at 1.30 P.M. - Rewards, £9 8s..
