DECEMBER 22ND. - WICK, CAITHNESSSHIRE. At 2.33 A.M. the coastguard reported that an explosion had been seen two to three miles south of Skirza Head, and it was thought to be either an aeroplane which had crashed or a mine which had gone off. There was a light S.S.E. breeze and a moderate sea. At 3.30 A.M. the motor lifeboat City of Edinburgh was launched and searched a wide area. She found nothing until 9 A.M. when she came upon an open parachute, with harness attached, close to Duncansby Head. Nothing else was to be seen, and the life-boat returned to her station at 12 noon. - Rewards, £19 15s. 6d.
