Early in the afternoon the crew had assembled at the boathouse during an air raid alert. The weather was clear, the sea smooth. and a southerly wind was blowing.

A tug was seen to blow up, having struck a mine, about five miles north of the station and the motor life-boat The Lord Southborough (Civil Service No. 1) was launched at 1.40 P.M.
