At 1.45 P.M. the coastguard reported that an Admiralty trawler had been blown up off the end of the breakwater. The weather was fine with a calm sea. The motor life-boat A.E.D. was launched at 1.55 P.M., with James Bell, one of the crew, acting as coxswain, but found only a dead body. Three injured men had been saved by a patrol boat.
