New Brighton: Volunteers vs the giant

Four incidents near New Brighton Lifeboat Station saw RNLI volunteers put their casualty care training into action during Wirral’s Giant Spectacular in October. As a giant puppet marched through the town, onlookers who took accidental tumbles and knocks, as well as one who fell ill, were all assisted by the boathouse team. And fundraisers provided a refreshment stop, serving more than 500 people – all in a day’s work! Deputy Launching Authority Andy Liston says: ‘We hope all those we cared for – ashore this time – make full recoveries, and we’d love to see them back again some time.’ The event was part of Liverpool 2018, which marks the 10th anniversary of the city’s tenure as European Capital of Culture. The giant had woken up on New Brighton Beach – apparently shipwrecked – before making the 21-mile journey to meet his fellow giants in Liverpool.
