3-PEAK SUMMIT FOR THE RNLI

In June, Shelley Phillips from Pendine raised an impressive £445 completing the National Three Peaks Challenge for the RNLI. The challenge calls for mountaineers to summit the highest peaks of Wales, Scotland and England – Snowdon (1,085m), Ben Nevis (1,345m) and Scafell Pike (978m) – within
24 hours. Shelley is a passionate supporter of the RNLI’s work in Pembrokeshire, and went to present her donation to the lifeguards providing seasonal cover at her local beach. Lifeguard Supervisor Oliver Davies- Scourfield says: ‘Our thanks go out to Shelley for completing this momentous challenge and raising such a large amount of money for the RNLI.’

A summer of firsts

t’s been a summer of firsts in Rhyl, with the station hosting the first ever Swim Safe event at a Welsh
lifeboat station and volunteers organising their first music festival. The Swim Safe session, run in joint partnership between the RNLI and Swim Wales, saw children from seven local schools learn about beach flags, how to perfect their floating skills, and how to call for help if they need to. Ysgol Llewelyn PE Co-ordinator Emma Parry says: 'Swimming itself is an important life skill, and to have the chance to swim
safely in open water is great. The group thoroughly enjoyed themselves.’ The station’s first music festival, held in July, saw five local bands donate time and talent to help raise money for the station’s Shannon class lifeboat appeal. Despite an overcast and blustery day, almost £600 was raised, and music, raffle, cakes and mocktails were enjoyed by all. To support Rhyl’s Shannon appeal, visit RNLI.org/RhylAppeal.

Barmouth

Dog show interrupted

Visitors to Barmouth Lifeboat Station got to see the crew in action when the pagers went off during their annual dog show in June. The dog show itself proved popular, with dogs of all kinds (and their humans) competing in a variety of classes. Best in Show was awarded to Storm and Storm’s humans Issy and Joe Downing (pictured).

New Brighton

Egremont Primary pupils visit station

Earlier this year, 24 year-5 children from Egremont Primary School visited New Brighton Lifeboat Station to learn about the work of the RNLI and how to keep safe near open water. Volunteer Deputy Launching Authority Andy Liston says: ‘It was brilliant to see schoolchildren buzzing with excitement while learning what to do if they’re in trouble in the water and how to spot if someone else is having difficulty.’ Pupils also had the opportunity to sit in the inshore lifeboat while Crew Member Steve Mole showed them the different parts and how they work. Teacher Stephanie Merry says: ‘Most of our children live very close to the water and this trip gave them an overall awareness of the RNLI and the
important job they do.’

Porthcawl Lifeboat Station
Bring the little ones along to see Father Christmas arrive by lifeboat (around 4pm), followed by an opportunity for the children to meet him in the boathouse, with music and craft stalls. No charge to meet Father Christmas, but donations gratefully received.
