Lifeguards at Bantham, Devon, were among the first to start their patrols this year, and they were called into action on 4 May when a surfer was caught in a rip current. Two lifeguards launched their inshore rescue boat to tackle the rough surf and reach the surfer, who had managed to stay with his board. They pulled him and his board onto the rescue boat and returned him safely to shore.
