We’re replacing the engines on our Severn class lifeboats to make them even more reliable while reducing maintenance costs and emissions.

The new diesel engines will be able to reach our desired top speed of 25 knots but without having to work as hard as their predecessors.

We worked with MTU UK to modify the engines for lifesaving purposes – they come with a bespoke sump and a capsizeproofed breather system.

Eleven lifeboats will have the new engines by the end of this year, with four more a year being fitted from 2013 onwards.
