Memorial garden update

There's never been a better time to visit the UK’s National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.

The RNLI section of the arboretum has just been redesigned, courtesy of expert garden designer Chris Beardshaw, a longstanding supporter of our charity.

The result is a coastal-inspired scene in which stone monoliths represent lifeboat crew members and rescuees, blue and purple plants represent calm seas, and reds represent danger and stormy waters. The wind moving through long grasses evokes the sights and sounds of an ocean in motion. There are benches for peaceful contemplation, and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Andrew Fitchett's popular and dramatic stone sculpture has been retained.
