Home on the Beach

RNLI lifeguards on Cornwall’s Fistral Beach finished the season with a brand new base.

Previously, the lifeguards on one of the UK’s busiest beaches were working from metal storage containers (above). Now, they have a much more suitable home (below).

RNLI Fistral Lifeguard Supervisor Lewis Timpson says: ‘It’s made a huge difference, the main thing being space. We now have a dedicated first aid room, storage, changing facilities and a large observational area from which we can watch the beach. The containers we were using quickly got crowded and messy and were just not nice to work from.’

Building work started last February on the two-storey building at the southern end of the beach car park, and it was completed in August.

The lifeguards will be back on patrol in Fistral in March, and on more than 150 other beaches around England, Wales and Northern Ireland over the Summer.
