The shape of things to come

FCB2 is the RNLI’s experimental lifeboat, which is being developed to replace the Mersey class. As we reported last year, the hull proved inadequate in rough weather. A new hull shape has now been chosen, and the RNLI hopes the first production FCB2 will be on station in 4 years.

After model testing on a range of specially designed and pre-existing hull shapes (pictured), including at the facilities of QinetiQ, it was clear that the best option was the one produced by the RNLI’s own in-house naval architects. The new hull performs well in all conditions. It gives good aft-deck space to make towing and working with helicopters easier. The Supacat launch and recovery equipment will need some modification to accommodate the new hull.

The charity’s engineers must now optimise the hull shape to make absolutely sure of the best possible performance. The prototype FCB2 is due to be ready for sea trials in 2011, with the first operational lifeboat of its class on station in 2013.
