Last Autumn’s issue of the Lifeboat introduced the RNLI’s experimental lifeboat FCB2. It is hoped this will evolve into the next generation of carriage-launched all-weather lifeboat, replacing the Mersey class. Unfortunately, the hull shape proved inadequate when tested in rough weather so the RNLI’s engineers are now working on a new design. More positively, trials also showed that the FCB2’s pioneering water-jet propulsion proved very effective, with significant advantages over propeller-driven craft, especially when manoeuvring in shallow water. Launch and recovery systems worked well too. However, at speeds of over 14 knots in rough head seas, the hull was slamming from wave peaks into troughs far too heavily to guarantee crew safety. This setback will delay the FCB2 going on service, but having a lifeboat that is both safe and fit for purpose for many years to come is the paramount concern.
