Well Dressing
Well dressing - a Derbyshire tradition dating back to 7350 - is a thanksgiving for the purity for the water in the village wells. The Sir William Hillary display, left, was designed by Ruth Markwell for the West Hallam branch and the lifeboat design, right, was created by locals for the Ashford in the Water Well Dressings.
The displays are created entirely of natural materials, such as fresh small flower heads, petals and leaves, which are laid on moist clay..
