He became a household name when he entered and won the 1968-69 Golden Globe Challenge for the first solo voyage non-stop around the world under sail and won the race. In the years that followed he raced successfully on the international multi-hull circuit and won the Jules Verne Trophy for a voyage around the world under sail in less than 80 days, has taken part in two Admirals Cup series and in 1992 sailed with Chris Bonington to Greenland climbing the famous Cathedral Mountain.

He recently took the Topsail Schooner Malcolm Miller on a voyage to the Artie, has been organising the Clipper around the world race for the last two years and is the President of the Sail Training Association.
