Richard Hawkins joined Dover lifeboat crew in 1959; he was an assistant motor mechanic at Dover from 1974 before being appointed coxswain/ mechanic of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in 1976.

He was awarded the thanks of the Institution inscribed on vellum in 1975 and the bronze medal in 1979..
