Only 43 of the 65 students that took part in the gruelling Lyke Wake Walk finished.

They came from South Shields Marine and Technical College and raised £555 for the RNLI. Here Heather Howard, the only girl Lyke Wake Walker to finish the course, hands the cheque to Mrs L. Fleming, honorary secretary of South Shields ladies' guild. With them are Mrs Belle Wilson, honorary treasurer of the local Shoreline branch, and Jimmy Hayton, a lecturer.
