IN 1971 the decision was taken that all offshore lifeboats not already fitted, should be equipped with VHP radio in addition to the MF equipment which has been standard since 1945. The resulting fitting programme, which involved the Institution's electronic engineers in the installation of VHP in 64 lifeboats, has now been completed.

In the same period, 35 VHP sets of outdated type have been replaced by modern equipment. All inshore lifeboats have carried VHP sets since March 1973..
