When the pilot of a Lightning jet aircraft from Leuchars had to abandon his aircraft on 4th March, 1970, life-boats from Broughty Ferry and Anstruther searched for him in darkness. The body of the pilot was finally found by the Broughty crew. In appreciation of the work put in by the life-boats the Northern Rescue Coordination Centre, Edinburgh, sent a telegram of thanks to the R.N.L.I. At the same time the squadron ground-crew at Leuchars over subscribed for flowers and decided to donate the remainder of the money—£10 to the R.N.L.I.
