Salcombe, Devon - At 1.5 p.m. on 6th September, 1967, the coastguardinformed the honorary secretary that a swimmer had been seen in difficulties off Rickham sands. The life-boat Baltic Exchange slipped her moorings at 1.11 in a fresh westerly breeze and a rough sea. It was one hour before low water. The swimmer was found in an exhausted condition clinging to a crab-pot marker buoy. Some skin-divers had also reached the scene in an open boat. He was taken on board the life-boat and made as warm as possible. Arrangements were made to have an ambulance and doctor meet the life-boat. On arrival he was attended by the doctor and then transferred to hospital. The life-boat returned to her moorings at 1.57..
