Tynemouth, Northumberland - At 8 p.m. on 18th September, 1967, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a flare had been sighted one and a half miles south of South Shields pier. The life-boat Tynesider was launched at 8.5 in a smooth sea.

The tide was ebbing. A small boat with three people on board was found near the wreck buoy off South Shields. The boat's engine had broken down and she was taken in tow to theRiver Tyne. The life-boat returned to her station at 9.15..
