Tula

Margate, Kent - At 7.3 a.m. on ist October, 1966, a yacht was reported aground on the Ridge sandbank half a mile south west of the North Tongue buoy. Although no distress signals had been made a passing ship reported that the yacht had a heavy list. The life-boat Elizabeth Elson, on temporary duty at the station, was launched at 7.26. It was five hours after high water. She proceeded to the position given and sighted the yacht Tula aground on the sandbank. The lifeboat stood by until 10.38 when the casualty, which had four men and a woman on board, refloated without any apparent damage. She then escorted the yacht until clear of the sandbank and returned to her station at 3.30. The Tula continued her passage to Hamble. A helicopter also proceeded to this casualty. The owner of the yacht made a donation to the Institution's funds..
