Bembridge, Isle of Wight - At 5.31 p.m. on 7th May, 1966, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a yacht, the Chillerton Dene of Poole, had lost a rudder and was drifting off Ryde pier. At 7.5 the position had not improved and it was decided to launch the life-boat.

There was a light north-westerly wind and a smooth sea. It was one hour before low water. The life-boat Jesse Lumb launched at 7.19 and came up with the yacht at 8.15. She took her in tow and proceeded to Portsmouth as there was not sufficient water for the yacht to enter the harbour at Ryde.
