Portrait of a Coxswain

COXSWAIN JAMES TURPIN, who has been coxswain of the Fowey life-boat since 1959, was previously assistant mechanic from 1948, when he joined the crew, until his present appointment. In 1958 he swam 100 yards through broken water from the Fowey life-boat to the help of a young woman and an auxiliary coastguard, who had been cut off by the tide. For this action he received the thanks of the Institution inscribed on vellum. Since his association with the Fowey life-boat she has been launched 117 times and has rescued 22 lives..
