Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Oliver, G.C.B., K.C.M.G., M.V.O., LL.D., died in his loist year on i5th October, 1965. He was, in the words of The Times obituary, "one of the outstanding seamen of his time". A man of few words and great achievements, he had an immense influence on the Royal Navy and has been described as the "father of modern navigation".

For thirty-six years Sir Henry was a member of the Committee of Management of the RNLI and a vice-president. The affairs of the Institution were always close to his heart. He served on all the sub-committees and from 1932 until 1944 was chairman of the boat committee.
