At 9.40 a.m. on i6th October, 1964, the coastguard told the honorary secretary that one of a small fleet of cobles which were making for shelter in the harbour had been delayed. The sea was moderate with light airs from the north-west and the tide was over two hours flood. The lifeboat Robert and Dorothy Hardcastle was launched at 9.52 to investigate the delay.
