TOWED TO RAMSGATE At 9.35 a.m. on ist September, 1964, the coastguard told the coxswain that a large motor yacht was four miles east of Elbow buoy and appeared to be broken down. It was two hours after high water when, at 9.44, the life-boat Michael and Lily Davis put out. She found the motor yacht Varina trying to make Ramsgate.

As the engine of the yacht had failed the life-boat tock her in tow. The harbour was reached just after midday when the owner of the yacht made a gift to each member of the life-boat's crew. The lifeboat returned to her station at 12.5 p.m..
