A Yacht (1)

TWO OVERBOARD At 4.34 p.m. on 24th September, 1964, the coastguard told the honorary secretary that a red flare had been fired at a position about 200 yards west of a wreck in Whitesand bay. There was a gale force southerly wind with a moderate sea. At 4.47, when it was about two hours after low water, the life-boat Lloyd's, on temporary duty at the station, was launched.

At 6.10 the life-boat reached a silhouettetype yacht, which had been stormbound on a lee shore and took her in tow. During the return to Millbay docks a following sea washed the yacht's crew of two overboard. One man managed to climb back on board the yacht unaided, but the second man had to be picked up by the life-boat. After this the yacht was made fast alongside the life-boat and eventually was safely berthed at Millbay docks at 9 p.m. The life-boat returned to her station at 9.30..
