TOWED TO NEWHAVEN Newhaven, Sussex. At 9.59 p.m. on 27th May, 1964, the coastguard told the honorary secretary that a vessel was flashing an SOS signal south-east by south of West Pier, Newhaven. Maroons were fired at 10.1 and nine minutes later the life-boat Kathleen Mary was launched with a full crew. It was almost high water, the sea was smooth and there was a light north-east breeze. In half an hour the lifeboat contacted the outboard speedboat Aires whose engine had failed, and towed her to Newhaven. At 11.45 the life-boat returned to her station..
