A Sailing Dinghy

MAN WAS MISSING Torbay, South Devon. At 3.8 p.m.

on ist October, 1963, the coastguard told the honorary secretary that a small sailing dinghy had capsized off Livermead Beach. A further message was received that two men had been rescued but one was missing. The life-boat Lloyd's, on temporary duty at the station, left her moorings at 5.55 in a gentle north-westerly breeze and choppy sea. The tide was flooding. The life-boat searched for the missing man without success until it was too dark. She returned to her station at 7.30..
