on Saturday the 17th of August, 1963, the Prawle Point coastguard reported to the honorary secretary that smoke signals had been seen south of Bolt Head. At 6.10 the life-boat The Baltic Exchange was launched in a fresh north-northwesterly wind and a slight sea. It was half an hour after high water.
