At 5.50 on the evening of Monday, the 16th September, 1963, the Factor of the island of Rhum telephoned the honorary secretary asking for the help of the life-boat as a man had a fish-bone stuck in his throat and needed urgent hospital attention.

Owing to adverse weather conditions and no other boat being available the life-boat E.M.M. Gordon Cubbin left her moorings at six o'clock, arrived at Rhum at eight o'clock, embarked the man and returned to Mallaig by ten o'clock. There was a gale blowing from the south-west with a rough sea and heavy rain. The life-boat returned to her moorings at eleven o'clock..
