At 3.50p.m. on Sunday the l l th of August, 1963, the Mumbles coastguard told the honorary secretary that a yacht had capsized six miles south of Mumbles Head. At four o'clock the life-boat William Gammon - Manchester and District XXX was launched in a fresh west-south-westerly breeze and a moderate sea. It was four and a half hours after high water. The life-boat found a catamaran which had been dismasted but was under outboard power. The life-boat asked for a helicopter to search the area to confirm that there was no other vessel in difficulty. The catamaran was escorted to Mumbles and the lifeboat returned to her station at 7.43..
