PEER KILLED WHEN HELICOPTER CRASHES St. David's, Pembrokeshire. At 4.12 on the afternoon of the 16th November, 1962, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a report had been received from R.N.A.S. Brawdy that a Whirlwind helicopter had crashed into the sea near Bishop Rock.

A later message stated that another helicopter had picked up some survivors and that the life-boat was not needed.

At 4.38 the coastguard reported that someone was missing, and at five o'clock the life-boat Swn-y-Mor (Civil Service No. 6) was launched. There was a strong west-north-west breeze, the sea was rough, and the tide was flooding. The life-boat searched the area half a mile south-west of South Bishop lighthouse in company with other boats and naval vessels, but found nothing. She finally reached her station at ten o'clock. Of the five people in the helicopter, four were rescued by other helicopters, including a squadron leader who died later. The fifth man, who was Lord Windlesham, was not found and was presumed to have drowned. The member of Parliament for Pembrokeshire expressed his admiration, on behalf of hi s constituents, for the efficient and speedy manner in which the rescue operations were carried out..
