SICK CHILD TAKEN TO MAINLAND Galway Bay. At two o'clock on the afternoon of the 1st August, 1962, the local doctor asked for the help of the life-boat in bringing a sick child from Inishmaan to the mainland as no other boats were available. There was a light south-west breeze and the sea was calm.

At three o'clock the life-boat Mabel Marion Thompson left her moorings on the flooding tide with the doctor on board. She reached Inishmaan and took the child from there to Rossaveel, where an ambulance was waiting to drive the child to hospital. The life-boat reached her station at 7.45..
