At 11.10 on the night of the 4th July, 1962, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that red flares had been seen three to four miles east-south-east of Gregness. The life-boat W and S, on temporary duty at the station, was launched at 11.25 in a strong north-north-westerly wind and a moderate sea. It was an hour and a half after low water.
