ITALIAN STEAMER DAMAGED IN COLLISION Eastbourne, Sussex. At 2.20 on the morning of the 12th April, 1962, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that two vessels had been in collision eleven miles south-east of the Royal Sovereign lightvessel. No help had been asked for, but at 3.3 the coastguard thought it advisable for the lifeboat to be launched, as no further information had been received. The lifeboat Beryl Tollemache was launched at 3.39 in a light westerly breeze and a smooth sea. It was an hour and a half before low water. One of the two vessels, the s.s. Arenella of Palermo, was found to be severely damaged, and the other vessel, the m.v. Stancloud of London, was standing by. No one had been injured in the collision.
