The Ex-Trinity House Launch Upway

Walton and Frinton, Essex. At two o'clock on the afternoon of the 21st October, 1961, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a boat appeared to be drifting north with the ebb tide. As a boat with two people on board had been reported missing, the coastguard asked for the life-boat to be launched to investigate. There was a light south-westerly breeze with a slight sea. At 2.15 the life-boat Edian Courtauld was launched. She met the drifting boat about two miles south-east of Walton pier and found her to be the ex-Trinity House launch Upway. Noone was on board. The life-boat towed the Upway into Walton backwaters, where the launch was moored. The life- boat then reached her station at 7.20..
