Aith, Shetlands. At 9.26 on the morn- ing of the 21st September, 1961, the coastguard informed the honorary secre- tary that a fishing vessel had broken down near the island of Papa Stour.

At 9.58 the life-boat John and Frances Macfarlane left her moorings in a light south-westerly breeze and a choppy sea.

It was one hour after high water. The life-boat made for the position in dense fog and deteriorating weather con- ditions. She found the motor fishing vessel Sea Gleaner of Scalloway, with a crew of four, and took her in tow to a safe anchorage at Voe. The life-boat then returned to her station, arriving at 2.40..
