Alycone

Humber, Yorkshire. At 6.28 on the morning of the 19th August, 1961, the coastguard informed the coxswain that there was a small yacht astern of the Humber lightvessel which needed help.

There was a strong west-north-westerly breeze blowing with a rough sea. The weather was cloudy. At 6.39 the life- boat City of Bradford III was launched on a flooding tide and made for the position given. At 8.29 she came up with the lightvessel. She took the yacht Alycone in tow. During the passage the weather deteriorated and a near gale began to blow from the north-west, causing a very rough sea. The life-boat therefore remained at Grimsby, as conditions were too bad to allow re- housing at her station. At 6.5 in the evening she left for her station, which she reached at 9.15. The owner of the yacht made a donation to the branch funds..
