Kindly Light and Mercury

At 3.35 on the afternoon of the 27th May, 1961, the honorary secretary was informed that anxiety was felt for the safety of two local boats which had taken parties of visitors to the Fame Islands. At four o'clock, when the life- boat Grace Darling was launched, there was a fresh northerly wind with a rough sea. It was two hours after high water.

The life-boat found the boats Kindly Light and Mercury, escorted them to North Sunderland, and returned to her station, arriving at 4.55..
