At 2.30 on the afternoon of the 24th of January, 1961, the local medical officer told the honorary secre- tary that a patient was in need of treatment on Inishere Island and asked for the use of the life-boat to take him there. Because of the weather con- ditions it was decided to agree to the doctor's request. The life-boat Mabel Marion Thompson put out at three o'clock in a south-easterly gale and a rough sea.
