Whitby, Yorkshire. At ten o'clock on the morning of the 27th of March, 1961, the honorary secretary noticed that six local fishing boats were still at sea. At 10.10, when the life-boat Mary Ann Hep- worth was launched, there was a fresh north-westerly wind with a moderate sea. The tide was half ebb, and there was a very heavy swell breaking on the bar.
